Small talk,
Transparent and barely tolerable,
Drops to the checkered sidewalk.
A chunk of cement strapped stilettos,
Costly and void, but always 90 proof,
Doesn’t sway the heart
Or stick to the ribs.

Butterfly stalker.
Fairfax Avenue graffiti
Covers up Rita Hayworth
With bountiful scars.
these words mean less
Than when
A bubble girl sang it.
That says a lot.

Words bounce back to you
And then up to the ridiculously blue sky
If there’s no one to catch them.

Cinderella’s Time in These Parts is Limited

Two homeless guys deal drugs
out of an abandoned station wagon
while the girl watches from the Silverlake Boulevard overpass,
eating a cookie in the dark.
Shopkeepers roll down their gates,
one by one til the streets are deserted.

She walks toward the only open door on the block.
Some old rock dude asks her if she has any heroin.
She gives him the rest of her chocolate macadamia cookie
And walks inside.

Read about the book “A Higher Form of Politics: The Rise of a Poetry Scene, Los Angeles, 1950-1990, at this link

The 1980s were a great time for poetry in L.A. – Bukowski reading at Al’s Bar, punk poetry with Exene, Henry Rollins and others, and poetry readings at the Lhasa Club and Cathay de Grande. If I can find my flyer from the reading I gave with the L.A. Surrealist Alliance in 1985, I’ll post it..

Suicide

Man in Frankenstein mask
Hanging from the limb of a streetlamp
As Gucci-wearers gawk.
The latest freak show on Sunset Strip.*
