The Rain

You respond to the rain the same way I do.
You listen to it fall on the windowsill,
A song mocking
Untouched skin
And
the starving, aching
Pit that pulsates
where a heart should be.
You’ll get out of the rain before I do.
Your friends will help you.
One gentle soul
Never knows another.
It’s not good copy.
The last dream of the night
Plays out
In that curious minute
Before I wake up alone.
Across the city, you do the same.
Telepathy by default.
I fold my body
Between your strong arms.
For one brief and fanciful moment,
We shelter each other from the rain.
